Memorial University
Archaeological Project

Memorial University conducted a three week archaeological project at the former site of Camp Rathbun on Deseronto Road, now the Kimmett Family Farm/Gold Wing Ranch.
Camp Rathbun is the most important World War 1 aviation archaeological site in Canada and the project involved a preliminary survey using GPS coordinates, metal detector and ground penetrating radar investigative work. A number of fascinating artifacts were located and I will be providing an update on this in the coming weeks.

Past Event June 2017
Celebrating the 100th Anniversary
RFC/RAF Canada WW1 "X" Squadron

Anniversary Event at the farm to celebrate the most exciting era at the farm when during WW1 in the years of 1917 & 1918 the land was secured for an airfield for the Royal Flying Corps to train Canadian, American and British pilots to fight in Europe during the Great War. Sadly though over 50 men lost their lives around/or in the fields while in training; one German spy was reported killed firing squad style by the oak grove near sucker creek & buried in front of the barracks. To this day it is tradition to “not cut the hay” at that location; it is recognized “where the grass stays green”.
